Neck Pain


Neck pain is one of the most common and every day type of pain that we experience that largely results from our modern day lifestyles. Causes of neck pain can range from mechanical issues such as prolonged sitting or slouching, reaching or extending for overhead activities, working long hours on computers or workstations, improper sleeping postures, or whiplash injury to non-mechanical causes or disease or other physiological origins such as stress or TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint syndrome).


Neck pain can originate from any number of disorders and diseases:

  • degenerative disc disease
  • herniated disc
  • pinched nerve
  • common infections
  • osteomyelitis
  • septic discitis
  • fibromyalgia
  • polymyalgia rheumaticaor diseases
  • meningitis (which is often accompanied by neck stiffness).


  • Neck pain will often occur with headaches. Neck muscle problems may refer pain somewhere else in the body and give rise to pain in the head, mid-back, shoulders or down the arms. Tension headaches and migraines are often caused by nerve entrapment that occurs at the neck, most especially at the junction between the neck and skull. Pain in your neck can be also be indicative of a more serious condition.

    Neck pain can be associated with dull aching. The pain in the neck may worsen with movement of the neck. Other symptoms associated with some forms of neck pain include numbness, difficulty swallowing, swishing sounds in the head, tingling, tenderness, sharp shooting pain, fullness, pulsations, dizziness or lightheadedness, and lymph node (gland) swelling.
